AI-Based Innovations at Mayo Clinic

#artificialintelligence

In a previous AI in Action column, we argued that in the world of health care, administrative applications of artificial intelligence were the low-hanging fruit. Sometimes, however, it is reasonable to reach for higher branches of the tree, and clinical applications of AI fall into that category. We expect that someday many important diagnosis and treatment decisions will be made or augmented by AI applications. Today we are in the early stages of achieving that objective. Most of the advances currently made by clinical AI are coming from innovative health care institutions.

Nasscom, Microsoft join hands to promote AI innovations in India

#artificialintelligence

To promote AI-led innovation in the country, the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) has unveiled a new program, AI Gamechangers, in partnership with Microsoft. The program has been launched to recognize impactful and scalable AI-based innovation in the country. According to the official release, NASSCOM and Microsoft will work jointly to develop and promote the AI Gamechangers program to spearhead AI's adoption across all sectors. As part of the program, NASSCOM will recognize the country's top AI innovators at its Xperience AI Summit, one of India's largest AI Summits. The program will enable organizations, academia, and NGOs to demonstrate their AI-based products and solutions to give further fillip to AI-innovation in the country.

Council Post: Serverless Cloud Computing Will Drive Explosive Growth In AI-Based Innovation

#artificialintelligence

As we look back at the past decade of innovation in the private and the public cloud space, led by Amazon, Microsoft, Google and IBM, the most significant emerging trend we see is the drive toward serverless computing and the appliance model. In the initial days of cloud computing, companies used cloud as a substitute for their colocation facilities and/or data centers. There were certain incremental benefits to this approach. One benefit was moving capital expenditure away from an equipment model to an operational model. Another was arriving at a service model where the cloud providers themselves take care of software updates, which was especially true with companies like Microsoft and Oracle.

How AI can be a force for good

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is not just a new technology that requires regulation. It is a powerful force that is reshaping daily practices, personal and professional interactions, and environments. For the well-being of humanity it is crucial that this power is used as a force of good. Ethics plays a key role in this process by ensuring that regulations of AI harness its potential while mitigating its risks. AI may be defined in many ways.

Why Our Conversations on Artificial Intelligence Are Incomplete

#artificialintelligence

There is an urgent need to expand the AI epistemic community beyond the specific geographies in which it is currently clustered. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer the subject of science fiction and is profoundly transforming our daily lives. While computers have already been mimicking human intelligence for some decades now using logic and if-then kind of rules, massive increases in computational power are now facilitating the creation of'deep learning' machines i.e. algorithms that permit software to train itself to recognise patterns and perform tasks, like speech and image recognition, through exposure to vast amounts of data. These deep learning algorithms are everywhere, shaping our preferences and behaviour. Facebook uses a set of algorithms to tailor what news stories an individual user sees and in what order.
